FAISALABAD: The murder of prominent industrialist Rehan Ashraf on main Jaranwala Road has sent shockwaves through Faisalabad.

It has punctured local police claims regarding crime control and raised hard questions about the city’s multi-billion-rupee Safe City surveillance project.

The Crime and Missing Valet

Ashraf was shot dead by unidentified armed men while reportedly pursuing his stolen vehicle.

According to the first information report (FIR), the episode began outside the Chenab Club.

The club is an elite hub frequented by industrialists, senior bureaucrats and high-ranking police officers.

Ashraf had handed over his car keys to the club’s valet parking staff. Shortly after, both the vehicle and the valet attendant went missing.

It remains unclear whether the attendant stole the vehicle or was coerced and abducted by criminal elements.

Safe City Claims Fall Flat

The daylight killing has exposed glaring gaps in urban policing.

Despite repeated distress calls, police personnel failed to reach the crime scene in time.

The suspects drove off on a major artery that is supposed to be under continuous camera monitoring.

For months, senior police officers had claimed the city was secure. They frequently pointed to aggressive crackdowns and controversial alleged police encounters as evidence of foolproof security.

They also cited the installation of Safe City cameras as proof that the city was safe.

Yet, days after the high-profile murder, investigators have little to show. Senior officers continue to tell reporters that they are “close to arresting the culprits” and will hold a briefing soon. But no breakthrough has been announced.

The failure of the Safe City infrastructure to intercept the stolen car or track the killers has triggered deep resentment among citizens and trade bodies.

Scrutiny Over Club Security and Valet Services

Social media users have also turned their scrutiny toward the club’s security protocol.

Questions are being raised about why the private valet company operating at the venue has not faced strict scrutiny or a comprehensive audit of its hiring practices.

In ordinary cases, private service providers are swiftly brought in for interrogation. But no clear action against the valet management has been made public so far.

PR Optics Versus Ground Realities

Local business leaders have also voiced frustration over the police department’s priorities.

Rather than focusing strictly on proactive policing and emergency response, several senior officers have increasingly leaned into social media management.

Critics argue that public relations stunts and influencer-driven campaigns to project a “hero” image cannot substitute for hard police work on the ground.

The trading and manufacturing circles of Faisalabad have demanded immediate answers.

They insist that if an industrialist can have his car stolen from an elite facility and be gunned down on a main road without trace, ordinary citizens have little reason to feel safe.

Police authorities must step forward, move past routine assurances and bring the culprits to book.
