For the House That Already Stands

Mehfooz Chhat is the Punjab government’s interest-free loan for a house that has become unsafe.

It repairs the home a family already lives in: an unsafe roof can be rebuilt or strengthened, one room can be added, or a full extra storey can be built on top.

The scheme opened in July 2026 and runs on the same portal as Apni Chhat Apna Ghar.

The two schemes are often confused, so read this line twice. Apni Chhat Apna Ghar builds a new house on an empty plot.

Mehfooz Chhat spends nothing on empty land; every rupee goes into a house that already stands and the family that already lives under its roof.

Both loan options are fully interest-free and the government pays the markup. The smaller loan is repaid at about Rs 4,700 a month and the larger at about Rs 9,300 a month, each over nine years.

That long period is the point of the design: a repair that cannot wait is spread thin enough for a working family to carry.

The Two Options

Work coveredLoanMonthly instalmentPeriod
Repair or strengthen an unsafe roof, or add one roomRs 500,000About Rs 4,7009 years
Add an extra storeyUp to Rs 1,000,000About Rs 9,3009 years

Who Can Apply

  • You must be a Punjab homeowner with an existing house — this loan is not for an empty plot.
  • The house must be weak or dilapidated, above all a house whose roof has become unsafe.
  • The loan must be spent on that same house: repair, strengthening, one added room or one added storey.
  • Families who own an empty plot and want a new house belong in Apni Chhat Apna Ghar instead.

The house is verified during the process, so the ownership record must match the applicant. A house still standing in a parent’s name or in a shared family name should be put in order before applying, because verification reads the record, not the family’s understanding.

How to Apply — Three Steps

1

Open the portal

Go to acag.punjab.gov.pk and create your account with your CNIC and mobile number. The same portal runs both housing schemes.

2

Choose Mehfooz Chhat

Select the Mehfooz Chhat option and submit your house details. Keep your CNIC and your house ownership record ready before you start.

3

Verification, then repayment

The house is verified and inspected during the process. After approval the approved work is funded and you repay the loan in monthly instalments over nine years.

What to Keep Ready

  • Your original CNIC — the portal account is created against it.
  • A mobile number you control — the account and its messages run on it.
  • Your house ownership record in your own name — verification reads this record.
  • Your portal account details, kept safe until the process completes.

Two More Punjab Schemes Worth Knowing

Apni Chhat Apna Ghar

Interest-free loan up to Rs 1.5 million

The parent housing scheme: an interest-free loan to build a house on your own empty plot, repaid in monthly instalments over seven years. Mehfooz Chhat is its repair arm for houses that already stand.

PSER Registration

Free — every household

The Punjab Socio-Economic Registry is the data base behind most Punjab welfare schemes. A household that is registered and verified in PSER is easier to select for support programmes across the province.

How the Money Works

Choose the loan by the work, not by the amount. If the roof is the danger, the Rs 500,000 option covers the repair or strengthening and can add one room.

The larger loan exists for a different job: a full extra storey, which is new construction standing on the old house and priced accordingly.

The instalment is the real decision. About Rs 4,700 a month for nine years is a very different household commitment from about Rs 9,300 a month for the same nine years.

A family that takes the storey loan for a repair job keeps paying the larger instalment long after the repair itself is forgotten.

No interest is charged on either option. The markup is paid by the government, so the amount repaid across the nine years is the amount borrowed.

Mistakes That Kill Applications

Read this before you apply:

  • Paying an agent to file. The application is free and agents have no role in selection. A fee buys nothing.
  • Applying under the wrong scheme. An empty plot belongs in Apni Chhat Apna Ghar. A standing house with an unsafe roof belongs here. The wrong door wastes the whole attempt.
  • Taking the storey loan for a repair job. The bigger loan means the bigger instalment for nine full years. Borrow for the work you actually need.
  • Starting the work before approval. The loan is approved against a verified house and approved work. Confirm the approval before you spend.
  • An ownership record in someone else’s name. Verification reads the record. Put the house record in order before you apply.

For Faisalabad Readers

Faisalabad’s old neighbourhoods carry many houses with tired roofs and weakened walls. Those are exactly the homes this loan was made for.

Apply from home on the portal. Keep your CNIC and your ownership record together, because both are checked during verification.

Never pay any agent for filing, because the application is free and agents have no role in selection.
