LAHORE: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Friday inaugurated the Crime Surveillance Unit in Lahore.
The unit puts the latest crime data of every Punjab police station a single click away. The unit’s head, Usman Tanveer, gave a detailed briefing to the chief minister on its working. It runs a smart policing system at district, circle and police station level, with digital monitoring of DPOs, DSPs and SHOs.
Data of 20 categories of crime will be compiled in the unit. Its experts will prepare instant data-analysis reports.
The performance of police officers, including DPOs, DSPs and SHOs, will also be analysed through the system.
Every citizen’s complaint or application will receive timely redress under the system. Action will also be possible in cases of delay.
The unit will also flag social media posts in line with national security requirements.
Good and bad people are everywhere, but criticising the whole force is not the right approach.
The chief minister sought a police reforms plan from the IG Punjab Police. She also ordered that the correct use of Police Station Record Management data be ensured.
Maryam Nawaz expressed displeasure over complaints of unjustified delay in the registration of FIRs. She directed an immediate response to negative propaganda against the police.
The chief minister said: “We want to make Punjab free of every kind of crime.” She said the purpose of establishing the Crime Surveillance Unit was to make the campaign for the elimination of crime effective.
She said raising a question mark over the police’s overall performance because of a few people was wrong. A historic trend of decline in the crime rate in Punjab, owing to effective reforms, was a welcome development, she added.
CM Hails Court-Fee Forgery Action
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has paid tribute to the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court for the action against the mafia involved in court-fee forgery.
She expressed satisfaction over the action against the elements that caused a loss of Rs1.5 billion to the national exchequer through fake court fee tickets. “The mafias that harm the country’s exchequer are truly national criminals,” she said.
She said the judiciary and the administration being on one page against corruption and crime was a harbinger of improvement.
“We are grateful for the cooperation of the Chief Justice Lahore High Court in the effort to eliminate corruption in Punjab,” she said.
