Faisalabad Factory Accidents: Worker Safety Concerns

November 25, 2025

By Saleem Mubarak

It would not be wrong to say that Faisalabad’s textile mills and their workers have, for decades, been working day and night to strengthen the national economy. Truly, their blood and sweat are part of this contribution. The rising number of Faisalabad factory accidents shows how vulnerable these workers remain due to systemic negligence.

The word “blood” is used intentionally because due to the negligence of government departments and their alleged collusion with mill owners, workers often face dangerous accidents. It has frequently been observed that minor accidents occur regularly and are rarely reported, while even major accidents are not taken seriously enough to prompt preventive measures for the future.

Causes of Faisalabad Factory Accidents

Several times in Faisalabad, boiler explosions have occurred, resulting in the loss of skilled and unskilled workers and leaving many children orphaned. These accidents pushed several families into poverty, as the deceased workers were often the sole breadwinners of their households. Even in recent days, another explosion took place in Malikpur, claiming the lives of 20 workers.

Following this tragic incident, it was necessary for the government to suspend the officials responsible for overseeing the machinery and operations of the factories in order to prevent them from manipulating the situation. However, nothing was done, nor was any information shared with the media. Instead only a committee has been formed to probe the incident and related issues.

Departments exist to monitor such factories, assess their operations, evaluate the condition of their machinery and ensure they function according to government requirements. But this did not happen. After such a major accident, the media reported that an order has been given for inspections of boilers. However, if these departments had truly been conducting inspections earlier, they should already have had complete data.

Boiler Explosions and Worker Casualties

Factories are not invisible structures that suddenly appear, nor can anyone claim that someone showed up, committed a crime, and then vanished like in a movie. These are immovable buildings that have existed for years in Faisalabad and the entire administrative machinery of the city knows what is installed inside them and what work is being done.

It is frequently alleged that government departments arrive quickly to collect bribes, and as a result, the officials ignore regulatory violations instead of enforcing rules. This criminal negligence leads to such accidents. Faisalabad is known as a textile capital of Pakistan and workers from far-flung areas come here for employment. Many factories linked to the textile sector operate here, providing materials to the broader industry. There should be an ideal environment for workers in Faisalabad; their lives ought to be safe and comfortable, and factories should comply fully with regulations. But this is not happening.

Government Negligence and Regulatory Failures

One should ask the government where the departments such as Industries, Environment, District Administration, and Civil Defence were? What was their performance? When did they last conduct inspections? Their inspection reports should have been presented to the media and public, demonstrating departmental performance and explaining that due to dissatisfaction with their work, a fresh survey has now been ordered. So far, there is complete silence on this matter.

An FIR has been registered and the owner of the factory has reportedly either surrendered or been arrested. However, these are not the real issues. The true issue is that those responsible — whether factory owners or government officials — must be held accountable.

It is highly unlikely that an ordinary worker could have illegally stored such a huge quantity of hazardous material without supervision. The factory owner allowed excessive storage of materials and the government officers failed to inspect or deliberately ignored these violations.

Impact on Workers and Families in Faisalabad

Sweeping the matter under the carpet will not solve the problem. If these issues are hidden, such accidents will, God forbid, continue in the future. What should happen is that strict punishment is recommended for all negligent individuals and the government should frame a policy to genuinely monitor such dangerous factories who play with human lives.

The policy should not simply exist on paper or generate meaningless tasks; it should be genuine, requiring officials to compile data through regular inspections. All inspection reports should be made public so that local residents know what is happening and when the last inspection occurred.

Residents of Millakpur, claimed that strange and foul smells often came from the factory, making life miserable for the neighborhood. The relevant government departments and district administration were reportedly informed, but absolutely no action was taken. Now, after such a huge tragedy, government officers are allegedly only trying to save themselves — their reputations and their jobs — by pretending to be extremely active, expressing sorrow, and running around to show that they want to prevent future incidents, they alleged.
