LAHORE: Punjab has set a 15-day deadline for a complete turnaround in cleanliness across the province, deciding to terminate solid waste management companies over unsatisfactory performance and run the service itself in five major cities.
According to a DGPR handout, the decisions were taken at a special meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to review the performance of the Suthra Punjab programme.
The meeting decided in principle to terminate the services of the solid waste management companies over unsatisfactory cleanliness arrangements. According to the handout, self-operation will be introduced in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan.
The chief minister expressed concern over dust and dirt on roads across the province. The handout said the chief minister ordered daily washing of main roads.
She directed the authorities to impose fines on those found littering roads after cleaning operations. Measures were also ordered to penalise people for dumping garbage in markets, bazaars and vegetable, fruit and grain markets.
The meeting also discussed imposing fines on owners of vacant plots where garbage was found.
Targets were set for ensuring adequate human resources and machinery in every district. According to the handout, cleanliness in villages is to be ensured every alternate day.
