LAHORE: Punjab has set a 15-day deadline for a complete turnaround in cleanliness across the province, deciding to terminate solid waste management companies over unsatisfactory performance and run the service itself in five major cities.

The decisions were taken at a special meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to review the performance of the Suthra Punjab programme, according to a DGPR handout.

The meeting decided in principle to terminate the services of the solid waste management companies over unsatisfactory cleanliness arrangements. Self-operation will be introduced in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan, the handout said.

The chief minister expressed concern over dust and dirt on roads across the province. She ordered daily washing of main roads, the handout said.

She directed the authorities to impose fines on those found littering roads after cleaning operations. Measures were also ordered to penalise people for dumping garbage in markets, bazaars and vegetable, fruit and grain markets.

Imposing fines on owners of vacant plots where garbage is found was also discussed in the meeting, the handout said.

Targets were set for ensuring adequate human resources and machinery in every district. According to the handout, cleanliness in villages is to be ensured every alternate day.

Deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners were instructed to hold weekly meetings with field monitoring officers. Key performance indicators will be formulated to assess the officers’ performance, the handout said.

The chief minister ordered timely payment of salaries to sanitation workers in every city and locality.

She sought details from all deputy commissioners about the machinery required for sanitation operations. A comprehensive record of the savings achieved through self-operation was also sought, the handout said.

Deputy commissioners were directed to physically verify machinery and equipment in their respective districts.

The deputy commissioners of Multan, Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Hafizabad, Muzaffargarh and other districts presented their reports in the meeting.

A follow-up meeting on the Suthra Punjab programme will be held after one week, the handout said.
