FAISALABAD: Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Noman Siddique on Friday announced a cleanliness operation in one tehsil every Wednesday, saying all departments will work from 7am until night to improve sanitation and civic facilities across the district.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the deputy commissioner under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision of a clean and beautiful Punjab. A coordinated cleanliness plan will be prepared with the cooperation of all relevant departments.

The weekly operation will begin at 7am on Wednesday and continue until night. It will cover sanitation, improvement of civic facilities, road rehabilitation and beautification of the tehsil selected for that week.

The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Municipal Services Anwar Ali Kanju, Additional Deputy Commissioner Enforcement Murad Hussain Nekokara, Deputy Director Local Government Zulfiqar Ali, Assistant Commissioner City Rangzeb Goraya and Assistant Commissioner Sadr Faisal Shahzad.

Assistant commissioners of Jaranwala, Tandlianwala, Samundri and Chak Jhumra, along with chief officers of municipal corporations, joined the meeting through a video link.

The deputy commissioner said the basic purpose of “One Week, One Tehsil” is to pool the resources and manpower of all departments so that coordinated and result-oriented steps are taken in one tehsil every week.

He said the programme will not remain limited to lifting garbage. Drainage problems, removal of encroachments, basic traffic facilities and beautification will also be completed under one comprehensive strategy.

During the operation, garbage will be lifted and shifted on time, standing water points will be cleaned, kerb stones will be painted, lane marking and zebra crossings will be restored, roads will be washed and street lights will be made functional.

The deputy commissioner directed the PHA, Wasa, Suthra Punjab Agency, PERA, Highway Department, District Council and municipal corporations to form special operational units with machinery, vehicles, drivers and field staff.

He appointed Anwar Ali Kanju as the focal person of the programme and directed him to ensure coordination among departments and the availability of resources. The relevant assistant commissioner will lead the operation in each tehsil.

The deputy commissioner said he will personally remain present in the tehsil concerned to supervise the operation and review the work under way at different places.
