The middle-class families are feeling some relief as chicken price in Pakistan falls across the country, thanks to the ban on exports to Afghanistan. The chicken price in Pakistan is showing a downward trend, offering much-needed financial ease for many households.
Wedding Season Budgets Adjust After Chicken Prices Drop
The skyrocketing prices of chicken had been creating issues for people, particularly for those who had set wedding dates for their children. However, they have now revised their budgets following the recent decline in prices of the chicken.
According to the market reports, the price of chicken has dropped by approximately Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kilogram during a couple of days. Previously, shopkeepers were selling chicken for Rs 450 to Rs 500 per-kg, but now the price has fallen to around Rs 400 to Rs 420 per kg.
Shopkeepers Accused of Overcharging Consumers
However, a new issue has emerged as shopkeepers associated with the chicken business have started to fleece consumers as they are charging rates for one kilogram of chicken, but in reality, they give only about 900 grams.
By reducing the chicken weight, the shopkeepers seem not ready to pass on the relief to consumers.

“This practice of the shopkeepers is tantamount to corruption, as sellers are going against the prices fixed by the government. It is mandatory for the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority (PERA) to bridle this trend and fix the shopkeepers exploiting the customers with impunity,” said Mohsin Ali, a consumer.
Experts Explain Why Chicken Prices Fell
He said that they have been informed that the recent drop in chicken prices is mainly due to an improved supply from poultry farms, favorable weather conditions and a decrease in the cost of chicken feed.
“Chicken is the main source of protein and is consumed by many middle-class families who cannot afford mutton or beef, as both are expensive.”
Traders Call the Relief Temporary
Shopkeepers and poultry traders of Faisalabad hold different opinions, citing the relief as temporary — any change in electricity rates, transportation or other costs could cause prices to rise again.
As citizens of the country, they also want relief, which will ultimately help people save money and other needs. The government must make arrangements to keep a regular check on the market so that profiteers cannot manipulate market dynamics.
Only regular checks can keep prices of chicken under control, they added. They urged the government to announce incentives for the poultry sector by reducing feed prices, which would be a positive sign for society.
Export Ban to Afghanistan and Its Market Impact
Currently, the rates are following a downward trend because of the ban on exports to Afghanistan.
A large number of our poultry farms usually send their products to Afghanistan to earn higher profits compared to what they make in Pakistan.
Their inclination towards Afghanistan disrupts the local market, which ultimately leads to an increase in prices. Both legal and illegal exports to Afghanistan also raise transportation costs and other logistical charges.
