In Faisalabad, routine visits to police stations have turned into exercises in frustration, with citizens held for long periods outside gates, subjected to slow, inadequate checks, and left in crowded, unsafe conditions.
While authorities tighten security in response to threats, the Faisalabad police’s rigid, poorly planned approach raises questions about whether these measures protect the public—or put them at greater risk.
The current situation highlights police station security measures and their effectiveness in protecting citizens.
Pakistan Police Station Security: Challenges and Risks
Following the incident in Islamabad, security arrangements across the country have been reviewed. Officials have ordered stricter checks at public places, government buildings, courts, and police stations. The intention is to prevent more attacks and protect citizens.
But the new measures have started to create confusion and frustration, especially at Faisalabad police stations where crowds of visitors gather outside the gates.
At many police stations, visitors are being checked without proper equipment. Police constables stationed at the entrance do not have metal detectors. Instead, they rely on basic hand searches. This simple method may not be enough in the current situation. And because each person is checked slowly, crowds begin to form. These crowds, security experts warn, can themselves become a danger. A gathering of people outside a police station can give hostile groups the chance to strike again easily.
Police officials insist that tighter controls are necessary. But many citizens say the system needs improvement, not just stricter enforcement.
How Crowds at Police Stations Increase Safety Concerns
Muhammad Afzal is among those who recently faced difficulties. Speaking to the Grand Line, he described his visit to the Ghulam Muhammad Abad, Faisalabad police station. He had gone there for routine work and when he reached the gate, a constable suddenly stopped him, instructing him not to move an inch without a body search.
The constable conducted a body search and he expected to be allowed in afterward. Instead, he was told to wait outside and no reason was given in this regard. He said the constable made him wait for nearly 15 to 20 minutes. More people gathered behind him and he counted at least two dozen visitors who were already standing outside the police station gate.
When he asked why everyone was being held at the gate, he was told that strict security orders had come from the government. No one was allowed inside without full screening.
“I thought perhaps a senior officer was inside conducting an inspection. However, I was wrong,” he said. He explained that during such visits, police stations often hold people outside. But he also feared that keeping crowds at the gate, especially in the current climate, could cause serious problems. “People are already unhappy with how the police treat them,” he said. “Now, under the name of security, they are being made to wait in tense conditions. This will only increase frustration,” Afzal added.
Citizen Experiences With Security Measures
Another visitor, Alam Din, shared a similar concern with the Grand Lines. He said the police of Faisalabad must protect both citizens and their own staff. But they must also create a system that prevents people from gathering at the entrance of a police station.
He pointed out that everyone standing outside is a Pakistani, and every life is valuable. He said that neither the police nor the visitors should feel exposed or unsafe. He believes the solution lies in better planning.
He suggested that people should be screened earlier, even before they reach the gate. Their details and purpose for visiting should be checked in advance. No one should enter the police station without permission or a clear reason, he added.
Government Guidelines for Enhanced Police Security
As the Faisalabad police strengthen their security, citizens hope the system will become both safer and more organized. They believe that protecting people should not mean putting them at risk by creating unnecessary crowds.
The challenge for authorities is to balance strict security with smooth, respectful treatment of the public. How well they manage this balance may determine whether their efforts result in safety—or create more tension, Din remarked.
Talking to the Grand Lines, an officer requesting anonymity, said that it is the responsibility of the government to provide the police with necessary equipment to ensure proper security at police stations.
He explained that, at present, police officers have no option but to stop visitors at the gate and allow entry only after a physical body search. He admitted that this security method carries many risks, but it is still better than providing negative elements free access.
Improving Public Safety While Managing Security Delays
“The wrongdoers hesitate to approach the police station when they know that a body search could land them in trouble. However, if a suicide attacker decides to strike we are helpless to stop him immediately,” he said.
This shows that while security measures protect citizens, they also need better planning to manage crowds and delays without creating new risks.
The Role of Equipment and Planning in Police Safety
Authorities are being urged to equip police stations with proper tools such as metal detectors and scanning devices. Proper planning and early screening of visitors can reduce long waits and improve safety for both the public and officers.
A balance between strict security and smooth operations is critical to prevent tension and ensure effective protection.
