LAHORE: As many as 1,150 rural women have completed textile training and secured employment under the Punjab government’s She Thread programme, which equips women with market-oriented skills for the textile sector.

The handout said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif had set a target of providing skill training to 2,500 rural women by June next year. The programme pays every trainee a monthly stipend of Rs 15,000 during the training period.

The Women Development Department has started the registration of women from rural areas of Lahore.

Training is conducted at Shahkam Industries on Multan Road, where participants are trained as industrial sewing machine operators and apparel supervisors.

The three-month course includes classroom instruction and practical training meant to equip the participants with the skills required by the textile industry.

The handout said women aged between 18 and 45, holding a Punjab domicile and at least a matriculation qualification, were eligible to apply.

Applicants can register at Shahkam Industries by submitting their national identity cards and domicile certificates. Selected candidates will also submit an affidavit before admission after verification of their eligibility.

Information about registration and eligibility can also be obtained from assistant commissioners, union council secretaries and the relevant district offices.

The chief minister said the initiative aimed to provide rural women with market-based training and enable them to earn a respectable livelihood. She said the programme would impart skills according to industry requirements and facilitate employment in the textile sector on completion of training.
